Curly was one of the best in the Minneapolis area just after World War II. He bowled for Madsen Construction and they bowled in the Melody Lanes Monarch League. He was a charter member in the All-Star League bowling for the Jennings Tavern team. His teammates were Shorty Clouse (HOF 1969), Sey Olsen, Charles Mory, Stub Bedor and Fred George. He also bowled in the Bryant Lake Major League, Bryant Lake All Star League and the Uptown Classic. He won the Actual Doubles Title in the 1946 Minnesota State Bowling Association Tournament. His doubles partner was Sey Olsen and they had a combined score of 1,220 for the title. In 1947 he bowled an exhibition match game at Melody Lanes against Junie McMahon (a National Match Game Champion). Junie had 191-277-247 for a 715. Curly had started out strong with 256-205-185 for a 646. Curly teamed with Bill Harich (HOF 1969) to bowl against Junie McMahon and Wes Hardy at an exhibition match at Lilac Lanes. Junie had 637 and his partner contributed 523 and they lost to Curley's 613 and Bill's 605. In 1950 he saw another Minnesota State Bowling Association Tournament win with Madsen Construction when they won the Actual Team Event Title. His first 700 series was 727 with a string of fifteen straight strikes. He had games of 210, 238 and 279. His sanctioned high game was 297 with a high series of 789. He had a league high season average of 198. |
